ATV Travel and Camp

Digital images from arid wilderness of outback South Australia

Late afternoon on the first day out, the sky came over stormy and threatening with some lightening and wind. I spent the time when I would normally have been photographing, setting up a sturdy camp about halfway up a low, gentle sand dune, which put me well above the flood prone corridore which runs between the parallel dunes, and on a reasonably dry surface. The storm didn't amount to much so I spent a quiet night.

During the course of this trip I got stuck a couple of times following 4WD tracks up loose sand dunes, having to back off and find another route, not so steep. The mud got me once too. By removing the trailer the ATV crawled it's way out and I retrieved the trailer with a rope.

Although the small trailer wheels didn't bog in the sand excessively, the ATV would no doubt handle the terrain better with matching ATV wheels on the trailer to float along the sandy and muddy desert surfaces.

Thorns were a problem with the tyres going flat. An excellent product I purcheced at the Roxby Downs Auto Pro in a pressure pack can did the trick. The flexable hose is screwed onto the valve and the pack inflates the tyre and puts puncture repairer into the tube. Surely I must have run over more thorns but the tyres have remained hard. Excellent product!
