My son works at Olympic Dam Mine situated about 100km north of Woomera in outback South Australia and lives at Roxby Downs, the town constructed to service the mine. When I visit, a great opportunity presents to obsorb and record a vastly different landscape than that which usually confronts me.
With dry salt lakes, myall trees, stone strewn clay pans, and red sand dunes, wilderness photography images clamour for my attention from Roxby Downs to Andamooka and beyond to lake Torrens.
In July and August 2005 I've made two further wilderness landscape photography trips to the Roxby Downs area, once again making my son's home, my home base . This time I've traveled by ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) so the combination of distance and rough terrain has not be a big problem. Riding distance of several hundred kilometers is possible with spare fuel and a tent on a small trailer, although I haven't had need to travel that far.
The managers of Roxby Downs, Andamooka, Bosworth and Arcoona Stations have been generous and helpful with permission to travel their land and given good advice about the country. This gives me an area of desert to travel and photograph about 120 km by 50 km without going near the borders of my authorised area.
