Early Morning Photography on Andamooka Station
With my little two megapixel digital camera screwed to my brand new, home made monopod, I pulled the car off the road a few kms along the Andamooka road from Roxby Downs and started shooting with the stars just gone in the east but the new moon still quite visible.
Growing to about six meters maximum the myall trees are stunted and twisted, having done it hard in the desert landscape with about six inch rainfall and extreme heat in summer of up to 48°C.
Around 15 years ago a bug got into the myalls and the result is the big half of them around this part of the desert are dead.
It's the twisted, gnarled forms that grab me. I see the form of a dancer in many a tree.
The desert country consistently puts on a great sunrise and sunset, backlighting the contorted forms of the myalls.
The red sand dune country supports myall trees and some short scrub so the dunes are stable and fairly firm under foot. Other areas are clay pan country and are much more barren.
