Dusk and Dawn - Colour Digital Wilderness Photography

Dusk and dawn as seen from my camp at Lake Torrens near Andamooka in outback South Australia

Digital Images by the Light of the Rising and Setting Sun

There must be exceptions, but it seems to me that the desert puts on a spectacular sunrise and sunset every day. From my various camps in the Andamooka desert, I've captured the most dramatic dusk and dawn displays. When the evening light has got too low, I've watched as the sliver of a new moon sunk to the horizon and I've stood in the cold wind, waiting for enough light to start photographing.

Sometimes there is a gap in light quality between dawn and sunrise, while on other occasions one just melts into the other. Of course the reverse happens at the other end of the day with the sunset and dusk.

Some of my dusk and dawn images are a bit shakey. Although I use a monopod with the digital camera, the low light levels of dusk and dawn require a tripod for best results.
