Lake Torrens - South Australian Arid Region - Digital Landscapes
Digital images of Lake Torrens in outback South Australia. A wilderness photography trip via Andamooka and Yarloo in outback South Australia
Lake Torrens is usually a dry salt lake with a muddy bottom and little hard salt crust.
Edward John Eyre was the first white man to see this country as he explored the Flinders Rangers, serching for grazing land and a path to the interior and beyond. He made three attempts to cross Lake Torrens, on the final try getting ten miles into the lake before turning back, sooner than loose the horses which were bogging up to their bellies in the mud.
To me, Lake Torrens and the surrounding desert typify all that is barren and inhospitable. Summer time temperatures cosistently rise to 48°C. To be lost or stranded out there without sufficient water would be the end.
