Rebuilding ATV Camp Trailer

A Rebuild of Some Facets of the ATV Trailer

The spare wheel for the ATV is now mounted on the back of the trailer, saving valuable space. For an item I'll never use, it takes too much room and is a difficult shape to pack around when on the trailer floor.

I've still to make the side gates. These will brace the spare wheel carrier and carry two large plastic storage boxes above the other gear.

On my previous camping trip I had boxes tied down on boxes on the ATV in order to carry enough gear for six days. There was one crate tied on top of the box on the front rack, the box which carries the tripod. Because of this I was unable to use my medium format camere till I set up base camp and removed the crate. So when fully loaded I had to be happy with digital images.

With two large boxes on the trailer, the labourious task of securing the load will be simplified.

The floor of the trailer will carry two 20 liter jerry cans of fuel and a 15 liter drum of water on the rear section. On the front two thirds I'll fit five open topped plastic drums with my tucker and cooking and eating stuff.

Rebuilding the ATV camp trailer is progressing.

Spare wheel mounted Today (31 December 2005) I put some paint on some of the bits that I've fabricated for the ATV camp trailer rebuild, which made them worth photographing.

The tow coupling is not quite finished. It's made with ¾" high tensile bolts as pins and a 1" high tensile bolt as the main angular rotating part, rather overkill, but I can be confident that the coupling won't catch or fail.

The tow coupling design allows for over 180° of horizontal and vertical movement and 360° angular movement. The full rotation allows that in the unlikely event of trailer roll over, the coupling won't be broken and the trailer won't take the ATV with it.

The part on the left of the photo, proped up with a peice of pipe, bolts onto the rear of the ATV. It still needs another peice of flat steel welded on and then some holes drilled.
