Twin update – 22 Jan 08

Well, as most of you will already know we have had the boys.

The twins were delivered by emergency ceasarian on Wednesday 16 Jan.  Brock Quinn was born at 1132 weighing in at 1285g and Zac Ethan at 1135 weighing in at 1270g (This works out at about 2lb 13oz each).  Funnily enough Brock was actually Twin 1 inside also.

Both boys were taken to the Special Care Nursery at King Edward Memorial Hospital but I did get to hold Brock before they went down.  Zac wasn’t doing as well as his brother when he was first born so I was only allowed to see him as he was wheeled away.

Dale went down to the nursery with the boys while I was sewn up and taken to recovery.  He was lucky enough to be able to hold Brock while he was being transferred to his incubator.  Dale wheeled me down to the nursery later that afternoon and I was lucky enough to be able to cuddle Zac when he was moved in to his incubator.

It was the most intense moment when I was able to see them both and see they were both doing ok.  I had been so scared that something was going to go wrong and to see them both out safe.  I nearly cried.

Dale had to go back to work on the Thursday but is only working half days.  He was able to come up to the hospital on Thursday afternoon and he wheeled me down to the nursey again so we could spend some time with the twins.  I had started expressing that morning so they got me to express beside one of the cribs to help bring the milk in.  It kind of worked.

Friday was a bit of a rough day for me.  The baby blues hit me in the morning, an absolute shocker, and I had a different midwife looking after me.  I had had the same midwife for the last two days and really liked her so it was a bit of a shock to wake up and see a different one.  Not that she was bad at all, she was in fact lovely, and really helped me with expressing.  But it was just a bad day for me.

By the time Dale arrived in the afternoon I was a bit more under control.

On Sunday we were both able to hold Zac and then on Wednesday we were both able to hold Brock.  There have been some more opportunities to hold them both but we can only do so when the nurses are able to get them out and they feel they are up to it.
