Brock and Zac – Update to 2 Apr 08
Hello again everyone. Another month has gone by and lots of stuff has happened with the boys.
One of the many health concerns for premature babies (born before 32 weeks) is ROP. I can’t remember what it stands for but it is to do with the retina not developing correctly and in severe cases can cause blindness. The boys were both scanned for this while they were in hospital and we were told that there would be more follow ups at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH) to check on the development of there eyes. The second appointment was while mum was here so we went up and there are no problems with there eyes and we don’t go back for another 3 months. Here is a photo of the boys chariot. Most people have commented on how bright it is, but at least I know we will never lose them in the shopping centre in it.

Mum left on 25 March and it was great to have her here to help out with the night feeds. It gave Dale an opportunity to get some sleep before going to work the next day. I only managed to get some photos of mum with Brock (I think it’s Brock) and we had thought we would just put the two photos on there and say one was Brock and one was Zac but I don’t think that’s really fair, so here is a photo of my mum (Grandma) with Brock.

We have been to the hospital for our first neonatal follow up appointment. We had this appointment at when they would have been term. We have another one at 4 months, 8 months, 12 months and another at 2 years. Both boys have put on weight and grown quite a bit. Brock now weighs 3330 grams and Zac now weighs 3250. There lengths are now 50.1cm and 48.1cm and there head circumferences are 37.4cm and 37cm. Brock also has a hernia on both sides of his groin so the neonatalogist wrote a referral to PMH for him to have surgery to fix it. Zac’s came up while they were still in hospital and has already been fixed.
Easter Saturday we went to a friends house for a BBQ. The boys were great. They slept in the car capsules through all the noise and were happy enough to be handed around to all the aunties to be fed and for cuddles. We were ever so proud of our gorgeous boys.
On Saturday 29 Mar Dale and I packed up the boys and went into Perth. It’s about an hours drive and the boys slept all the way. We had a bit of a wander around the mall and met up with Toni, a friend of ours, who hadn’t seen the boys since they were born. She was quite impressed with how much they had grown and also by how cute they are. We are trying to get them used to going to people so Toni got to have a hold and to feed Brock. It was the first baby she’s fed and she did a wonderful job. I didn’t take the camera up with us so don’t have a photo to show you.
I was all excited on Monday (31 Mar) as I thought we were getting in to a bit of a sleep routine as we had had 3 nights in a row where we only got up once. Unfortunately in my excitement I think I jinxed us as then on Monday night Zac would not settle and so we had basically no sleep that night. He’s still a bit unsettled but is still eating so we assume he is ok. A great big thank you to Leonie for coming down on Tuesday morning and looking after the boys feeds so that I could go back to bed and get some sleep. It made it so much easier to cope for the rest of the day, and the week.
Also on Monday we had an awful lot of rain that came down very quickly. Our front little entry way into the house started flooding which made for some fun for me. I was out there in my dressing gown, in the rain, trying to clear the drain area of all the leaves and loosen up some of the sand so all the water could drain away. There were two really big downpours that I was out there in. The road out the front of the house was a river. There was quite a lot of thunder but both boys slept through it quite calmly. When they are asleep they are good little sleepers.
Today I had my first major outing on my own with the boys. It was a pretty safe one as I went across to work to have lunch with Dale and show the boys off. Both of them were very well behaved and went to everybody no problems and hardly grizzled at all. We then went to the shops to pick up a few things before coming home. It was good to get out and to prove to myself that I can do it.
Ciao for now
