Week 5 – Monday – Nullarbor to Balladona (nope Norseman)

Surprise, we were able to update tonight.

Off by 8am this morning and a good start, although it was raining again. Mind you we realised when we crossed the border that with the time difference we had actually left at 6.30am. Dale drove the 146 km straight, which is the longest straight stretch of road in the Southern Hemisphere.

Border Village not surprisingly is on the border. There is a quarantine station here that you must pass through and also the Big Kangaroo. Here is Lion with the Big Kangaroo but more important that the sign has been graffitied “Dale 4 Liv”. I would really like to know who Liv is ;-)

Mundrabilla is also on the way across the Nullarbor and there is another car graveyard there. We got permission to head up there and got some more photos.

No other real highlights for today. When we got to Balladonia it was only 2pm (with the time change) so we decided to drive on to Norseman. We found a brochure with some accommodation and booked a hotel from Balladona. Looking back on it, this was probably not the right thing to do. We got here and the hotel is quite a dive and Norseman is overall not much of anything. It really is past its prime. After a drive down the main street (which is not much) we decided to go back and have dinner at the Railway Motel. We had a game of darts and then came back to the room which we think is the safest place to be.

Tomorrow we are up to Kalgoorlie.

Catch you all a bit later.

PS – even with the time difference, Dale has driven 10 hours today. He is feeling rather tired and will sleep very well tonight.
