Working conditions between the two world wars were pitiful. Employers could just about get away with murder.
I heard that some blokes looking for work used to wait outside a business, in case someone got fired and they could get the job. I believe it.
Dad talked to his neighbour often of an evening. They would sit [...]

When they couldn’t make the payments, they lost that house, and subsequently rented the place in Fitzroy, where I was born. Then we moved [...]

Mum moved our few possessions, including the double mattress, on the old pram during the day, but she couldn’t move the double bed. Mum, Phyllis and I shifted with all our stuff, but Dad [...]

There were a lot of orchards in the Diamond Creek area at the time, and for many years later.
Dad didn’t get the job, bur Mr [...]

Going up Sherbourne Road, a steep hill, the horse lifted it’s tail and let go some wind. Dad prodded the horses back-side with his whip and Mum said “Oh, you dirty brute!”

According to my birth certificate, I was born on April 2, 1922 at 115 George St, Fitzroy.
What actually happened was that Mum (Amy McArthur) went into labour and was walking the quarter mile to St. Vincent’s Hospital when I wouldn’t wait any longer! So she squatted in a culvert beside the road and gave birth [...]
