I found myself at a partly broken dam, a huge construction undertaking for a sheep and cattle station, though still with a pretty fair holding capacity despite the wall being breached to a level well below the spillway level.

Camping at Lake Richardson on Arcoona Station in outback South Australia, not all that far from Woomera, I was up and going before daylight to photograph the salt lake in the flattering morning light as dawn broke and the sun rose.

Although a tripod and cable release is the optimum way to go, for this type of lighting and country I often use a monopod, shortened so that I get down on my knees or else tuck it into my belt to hold it steady.

Despite the commitment of many digital photographers to Adobe Photoshop, these images have been post processed in Irfanview, a basic image viewer with good image manipulation plugins.

In Irfanview, it's possible to select a limited area of the image and stretch the values over the whole image according to the pixel values within the selected area. That's what I've done here.
