Dingo Prints in the Sand Dunes – Andamooka Waterhole- Outback South Australia

Dingo Tracks – Andamooka Waterhole – Outback South Australia.

Walking in the sand dune near my camp at Andamooka Waterhole this morning, as I dropped down the western side, the side furtherst from my camp, I saw numerous little animal tracks, no doubt left overnight in the damp sand.

The tracks were concentrated in this one area of the dune. Little bird prints and those from lizards or some such, I guess there must have been seeds there to attract some of the animals and others such as ants may have been prey to the larger animals.

Then I saw the single line of dingo tracks. Only 250 metres or so from my camp.

Dingos, left to their natural ways, keep well away from people. They’re not really much of a threat. Trouble is, when dingos get accustomed to getting a free feed from humans they get game and can get agressive in their hunting habits. That is, having lost the fear of man, they will come around scrounging for food scraps and have been known to attack people.

But right out here the dingos should be untouched, you’d think. Not so!

I guess I’m about mid way between Bosworth homestead and Andamooka opal mines, maybe 30 kilioetres to either from here, as the crow flies. Max Greenfield, the pastoralist at Bosworth station, has told me of sighting several dingos around his homestead in recent times. He thinks they must have lost the fear of man by scrounging a feed around the opal miner’s homes at Andamooka opal mines. He tells me that a dingo would easily cover that much country.

So the dingo that padded his way through the dune just close by overnight, could well be one of those that visit Andamooka opal mines and also visit Bosworth homestead.
