John McDouall Stuart’s Camping Spot

G’day.

There’s been significant erosion in the arid region due to the combined effects of overgrazing, rabbit plagues and drought.

However, in the region of Andamooka Waterhole, the damage seems to be not a severe as in some places. It seems reasonable to suppose that the landscape seen by John McDouall Stuart was not all that different to what the outback traveler sees today.

Arriving at Andamooka Waterhole just on sunset, there was really only one suitable place to camp, within cooee of this once splendid, permanent water. A small flat spot without too many stones and not too far from the high water line, with a bit of firewood washed down by a long distant flood, it suited the purpose of a wilderness traveler and photographer, very well.

So, I reckon that I camped in John McDouall Stuart’s very spot.
