West of Lake Torrens

Well, G’day.

As you may know, planning is well underway for a wilderness landscape photography trip to the west of Lake Torrens, in September.

Here’s the link for a map of the area, sent to me by the president of the John McDouall Stuart foundation, who has been most helpful as I plan for this next trip to the country explored by this famous Australian explorer. Country west of Lake Torrens

The World, 1850
World map. Margaret Watson, 1850, is written on the cover.

Pictured is a map of the world, which has been in the McArthur family for many years. On the cover, written in ink, perhaps with a quill, is the name, Margaret Watson and the date, 1850.

In 1850 the interior of Australia was almost completely unknown to the white comunity.

John McDouall Stuart traveled this outback country in 1858.

Swinden and Babbage had preceeded Stuart to the country west of Lake Torrens. On subsequent trips of exploration, John McDouall Stuart was the first white man to see the centre of Australia, and to cross the continent from south to north. Stuart discovered and surveyed the rout for the overland telegraph from Adelade to Darwin which was linked to the submarine line from England and Europe, thus giving the young colony a fast link with the outside world.
