G'day Bill! Thanks for the comments and kind words.

Yes, you found the right Ron McArthur, alright!

I remember your name. Dad would sometimes mention the conversations he had with you and the person that you are. He really appreciated you for the time you took and your non pushy way of providing service.

He appreciated that you had a good feel for what would sell in his situation and didn't try to push goods on to him that he'd be stuck with, as some travelers would.

Yes, you're right about the family living behind the shop for several years till Dad bought a block of land on the outskirts of Diamond Creek and build a new home.

Bill Cavill featured throughout Dad's life. Bill would have been a young adult at the tent Sunday School and Gospel Hall when Dad was a kid.

For several years, Bill was manager of Stubly Motors where Dad worked. I guess Bill gave Dad a job.

When Dad died, I came by some paper work that included some addresses from the past. In January, accompanied by my grandson, Nicky, I'm making a trip to see Dad's father's grave. He died when Dad was 14. We'll also view the tenement house in Fitzroy, where Dad spent his first two years.

I have another website, if you're interested, called Hunger on Two Legs which is a reproduction of some of Dad's book by the same name, telling of his childhood and teens during the Great Depression.

Hello Laurie,
I was just playing around on the net and I came across your beautiful tribute to your father Ron McArthur.
It made me wonder if it was the same Ron McArther that I knew very well from about 1959 to 1971 as a client of mine and who had a small drapery shop in Chute St Diamond Creek.
I can remember him always talking about his holidays in Yackandandah and how much he loved the area. That is how I made the connection.
If it is the Ron that I knew I can only say that he was a fine man, a very honest man to do business with and that I always enjoyed going into his shop. I seem to also remember that there was always a cup of coffee given to me. I had a feeling that the family lived behind the shop!!!!!!!
I also had another drapery shop client in the area, a Bill Cavill at Montmorency and I also seem to remember that they were great mates.
Maybe it is not the Ron that I knew however there are a lot of similarities and it certainly does not diminish your wonderful tribute to YOUR father, whether it is the Ron that I knew or whether it is not.

Best wishes

Bill

Thanks Beth. Appreciate your thoughtful comments, especially as you too, are mourning your dad at this time.

You have a way with words Laurie, and this page is a tribute to your Dad. You will always remember the comeradeship between you. What has been learnt from him your children and grandchildren are learning from you. He won't be forgotten, that's for sure.
