Lake Eucumbene Wilderness Landscape Photography Trip

Moonscape wilderness landscape - Lake Eucumbene in the Snowy Mountains

Well, you’d expect landscape images of Lake Eucumbene on the Monaro, at the foot of the Snowy Mountains, to feature blue water images, lush plants and flowers, chocolate box photos of an idillic recreation spot.

Near Frying Pan, looking across a narrow arm of Lake Eucumbene, standing in the early morning shaddow of the hill behind.

To the contrary, the continuing drought, including several poor snow seasons, has left the dams of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric scheme, sadly depleated.

But all is not lost to the wilderness landscape photographer. With the water level down about 60 metres (200 feet) on the high water mark, the landscape would blow your mind.

Outstanding among the wilderness landscape features are the rocks and trees.

Yes trees! Dead snowgums that have been submerged in the chilly water of Lake Eucumbene for fourty years of more. Well preserved in the dark and cold of the depths. A mixture of stately and tortured forms but all imposing.

Similarly, the rocks are stark, bear and clean. Granite rocks, some huge, some with pinical forms, others bulky and squat, but all comanding attention as they dominate this exceptional wilderness landscape.
