Woomera – Andamooka – Lake Torrens – Outback South Australia

So, where’s Woomera? Where do I find Andamooka? What kind of a lake is Lake Torrens and where is it? What about Arcoona and Andamooka stations? Where are they? Well, find me right now and you’ll soon find these outback places.

Right now I’m camped at Lake Richardson on Arcoona station, about twenty kilometres north east of Woomera. I can see the lights of Woomera at night as I’m on the high country overlooking Lake Richardson.

It’s come up quite windy so the top of a hill isn’t the best place to be camped, but I camped here for the best Next G signal.

Although it’s quite windy, there’s little of the outback duststorm that I’ve been caught in on two previous occasions. The wind isn’t as strong yet is one reason and the soil is a bit damp from the recent good rains. But I did notice a small dust storm over by Red Lake, about lunch time.

Oh, I had a great ride yesterday afternoon around Red Lake. Nothing like what I expected. Not all that red except in the watercourse. No water except in the waterholes of the creek.

The water is slightly dirty, a good sign that it is fresh and not salt. Well, it tasted a bit salty but I guess you could drink it. It would do for stock.

I saw a couple of kangaroos and there were emu prints along the mud flats, so the native animals must think the water is OK.

Yes, I’d have been much happier down by the lake, out of the fearful wind that sprung up today, and a cheery campfire. Even if firewood is scarce, at least I could scrounge enough to cook a feed and have some firelight at night.

I’m sitting on my bed, made up under the canopy of the ute, back against the loading board, laptop on my legs, a LED head torch set on one red LED to light the keyboard.

I brought a bamboo pole from down the river, at home, so the external antenna is about 15 feet in the air.
