Well, we're camped in the Big4 caravan park at Hawker which is a small, outback town in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. No oven in our van and I hadn't yet discovered the camp kitchen so I decided to try baking a loaf of bread on the barbecue plate.

Not all that difficult, surprisingly enough!

I made the loaf fairly flat and allowed it to do the second rise on the non stick BBQ liner, on top of the barbecue plate. When risen sufficiently, I started the gas, covering the loaf with a stainless steel bowl to try and keep the heat in a bit.

On smelling the aroma of freshly baked bread, I turned the loaf with the egg lifter.

Well, I have to tell you that my bread got just a little burned on the top and bottom, but not to the point of it being a failure.

I reckon with practice this could be a viable method of baking bread. It cut and ate alright, still hot with butter.

Next time I'll try flat bread, maybe starting out a centimetre thick, rising to two centimetres before starting the gas. Four flat bread loaves should fit on the barbecue plate.
